2012 Women's Golf Championship Information
2011 NJCAA National Champions
The Daytona State College Lady Falcon Golf Team finished its 13th season by capturing their 5th NJCAA National Championship title. With this win, the Lady Falcons have back to back national titles in 2010 and 2011 and won 3 consecutive NJCAA Championships in 2003, 2004, and 2005. Mitsuki Katahira also won the individual National Championship title in 2010 and 2011 and is the most successful Falcon in the history of the program.
The Lady Falcons have graduated all three of their top guns from the last two years and these players will be missed greatly. Mitsuki Katahira has recently turned pro and is setting her sights on the LPGA Tour. Ericka Schneider is attending the University of Mississippi and Amy West is attending University of South Florida, both on golf scholarships.
The 2011-2012 season starts the 14th year of the women's golf program. There are 6 new players joining the Lady Falcons this year and only 2 returners. Expectations are high for the Lady Falcons, especially coming off the best two years of the program. Most of the players on the squad are new additions, but these players are ready to step up to the challenge.
Returning players for the Lady Falcons include Kelly Miller from the United Kingdom, who posted a 15th place finish at the 2011 NJCAA National Championship while earning All-American Honors and Kaylee Random from Alpharetta, GA, who placed 20th at the NJCAA National Championship. New players include Megan Garland from the United Kingdom, Noriko Inoue from Tokyo, Japan, Callie Kitchens from Tallahassee, FL, Anna Lesher from Ashland, OH, Carla Duenas from Port Orange, FL and Erin Selfridge from Fleming Island, FL.
The Lady Falcons have a very competitive fall and spring schedule and will compete mostly against NCAA DI teams throughout the year. When you come to Daytona State College you expect to play at a very competitive level all season long. The character of these young women will provide them with the strength they need to get off to a great start and earn the exposure they deserve. The tournaments that they will compete in will help to raise the team's playing abilities and push them to their true potential.
Coach Laura Brown has built a program that successfully blends academics, teamwork, and positive personal development – all of which attract athletes that desire the opportunity to advance their degree pursuits, perfect their game, and benefit from a coach with LPGA experience.
The Lady Falcons goal this year is to have continued success on the golf course as well as in the classroom. Last year, an overall team GPA of 3.16 and 5th place overall in the national academic standings demonstrated the team's hard work and dedication to their studies. The successful finishes that the team has posted at the national championship over the last several years have also proven their commitment to their sport and the desire to be the best. With Daytona State College hosting the 2012 NJCAA National Golf Championships once again, we look to have a strong showing and hope to successfully defend our national championship title. The outlook for the 2011-2012 season is very positive and we look for the Lady Falcons to once again have a very successful year.
